Fe (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex
Indications/Uses
Fe deficiency w/o anaemia (latent Fe deficiency) & Fe deficiency w/ anaemia (manifest Fe deficiency).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Chewable tab Adult & adolescent >12 yr Fe deficiency w/ anaemia 1 tab once daily to tds for 3-5 mth until normalisation of Hb value is achieved. Then, continue w/ 1 tab daily for several wk to replenish Fe stores. Fe deficiency w/o anaemia 1 tab daily for 1-2 mth. Drops Fe deficiency w/ anaemia Therapy takes about 3-5 mth until normalisation of Hb value is achieved. Then, continue therapy at the dose indicated for Fe deficiency w/o anaemia for several wk to replenish Fe stores. Adult & adolescent >12 yr 40-120 drops daily. Childn 1-12 yr 20-40 drops daily. Infant <1 yr 10-20 drops daily. Premature baby 1-2 drops/kg daily. Fe deficiency w/o anaemia Therapy takes about 1-2 mth. Adult & adolescent >12 yr 20-40 drops daily. Childn 1-12 yr 10-20 drops daily. Infant <1 yr 6-10 drops daily. Syr Fe deficiency w/ anaemia Therapy takes about 3-5 mth until normalisation of Hb value is achieved. Then, continue therapy at the dose indicated for Fe deficiency w/o anaemia for several wk to replenish Fe stores. Adult & adolescent >12 yr 10-30 mL daily. Childn 1-12 yr 5-10 mL daily. Infant <1 yr 2.5-5 mL daily. Fe deficiency w/o anaemia Therapy takes about 1-2 mth. Adult & adolescent >12 yr 5-10 mL daily. Childn 1-12 yr 2.5-5 mL daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take during or immediately after a meal. May be mixed w/ fruit or vegetable juices/other liqd/bottle-feed.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Fe overload. Fe utilisation disorders. Non-Fe deficiency anaemia.
Special Precautions
Confirm blood Fe & Hb levels before starting treatment & monitor periodically. Caution in patients w/ infection or tumour. Caution in patients who have received blood transfusions due to risk of Fe overload. Not recommended to use w/ injectable Fe prep. Pregnancy & lactation. Chewable tab Not suitable for childn <12 yr. Drops/Syr Patients on Na-restricted diet. Should not be taken by patients w/ rare hereditary fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency. Drops Contains Na methyl hydroxybenzoate (E219) & Na propyl hydroxybenzoate (E217). Syr Diabetic patients. Contains methyl hydroxybenzoate (E218) & propyl hydroxybenzoate (E216). Not suitable for infants <1 yr w/ latent Fe deficiency.
Adverse Reactions
Stool discolouration. Diarrhoea, nausea. Chewable tab Indigestion. Occasionally, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, tooth discolouration, headache, local skin reactions (itching, rash). Very rarely, allergic reactions. Drops/Syr Constipation, stomach ache. Occasionally, vomiting, tooth discolouration, gastritis, itching, rash, hives, erythema, headache.
